Campaigns Overview

"The time when psychiatrists considered that they could cure the mentally ill is gone. In the future the mentally ill have to learn to live with their illness."  -  Norman Sartorius, former president of the World Psychiatric Association (1996-1999), addressing the Association of European Psychiatrists Congress, 1994

The Citizens Commission on Human Rights, UK campaigns to:

  • Educate people about other 'therapies' for the treatment of mental problems that have historically been delivered within communities, churches and through family & friends.
  • Research for the root causes of mental health problems, rather than relying upon 'easy' drug-based control of symptoms.
  • Stop the 'manufacture' of mental disorders and the practice of 'disease mongering.'
  • Prevent the diagnosing of people with unscientific labels that result in the use of long-term psychiatric drug prescribing practices. These labelling practices stigmatise patients.
  • Promote the well-being of individuals and thereby society overall, through therapies that work. Getting rid of long-term treatments that don't cure, and prevent the 'revolving door syndrome' and unwanted hospitalisations and fatalities.
  • Stop the inappropriate and wasteful funding of mental health practices that are not based on scientific models and present no cures.
